Bromley comes together for the celebration

Residents came together across the borough to celebrate the Coronation, with many festivities taking place throughout Bromley over the special bank holiday weekend between 6 and 8 May.

Tree planting

The Coronation bank holiday was kicked off with a special tree planting ceremony carried out by the Mayor of Bromley. The English oak tree was planted in the presence of the Pearly King of Bromley, Chris Conlan, who was also inaugurated into the role. Find out more about the tree planting

Live screening

The Coronation was screened live at Queens Gardens on Saturday 6 May from 9.30am, with residents coming together to experience the historic occasion. A host of activities from the library service and Clip Theatre also took place, with traditional Broom flowers being handed out by Bromley Civic Society.

A further screening of the Coronation is was held in Orpington town centre which was delivered by Orpington 1st BID

Best decorated shop competition

Following many welcome nominations across the borough, Francis Chappell & Sons in Bromley town centre were selected as the best decorated Coronation shop.

Street parties

Over 172 street parties were held as residents celebrated the Coronation, with many raising a glass to His Majesty the King. The Mayor of Bromley and the Deputy Mayor celebrated with as many residents as they could on their street party tour across the borough. Highlights from the street parties and further celebrations are on Instagram.

As well as waiving fees for road closures for Coronation street parties, community celebrations across the borough were supported with smalls grants of up to £500, delivered to community groups holding celebratory events.

Town centre decorations for the Coronation

£20,000 was allocated to decorate the town centres, with this being delivered through the borough’s Business Improvement Districts.

Remembering the Platinum Jubilee

The Coronation celebrations built on Bromley’s great legacy of enthusiasm for Platinum Jubilee in June 2022  when a record number of street parties were held in Bromley alongside a host of exciting local and national events. Find out more at  www.bromley.gov.uk/platinumjubilee.
