There are 47 conservation areas in Bromley. The council has designed each one because of its special architectural or historic interest. Designation aims to protect an areas character and appearance by managing change in a sympathetic way. This is done through town planning legislation and the Local Plan (PDF - 8.11 MB) (Policies 41,42 and 43).
As conservation areas are designated under different legislation to the Local Plan, they can be created or amended during the life of the plan, consequently not all such areas are listed in Appendix 10.16 List of Conservation Areas of the Local Plan interactive document.
The council has adopted guidance for various conservation areas to help define the special architectural and historic interest of these areas and to clarify why they merits 'designation'.
Consultation on Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Plans, February 2025
From 3 February to 3 March 2025, the London Borough of Bromley consulted on draft Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan documents for the following conservation areas:
- Shortlands Village
- Bromley Town Centre
- The Covert
- The Thrifts
- Chislehurst Road
The documents provide detailed statements of character and appearance for the conservation areas, setting out the reasons for designation along with a management plan for their conservation. The documents are relevant to development proposals and enhancement works in the areas they cover.
Following the end of the consultation, the council are considering all representations received, before preparing final adoption versions of the documents. Adoption of the documents is a matter for the Council’s Executive. Once adopted, the documents will be published on this webpage.
Planning applications
There are some additional planning controls in conservation areas and trees are given protection. Supplementary Planning Guidance notes have been prepared for most of our conservation areas to assist residents and developers. Find out more about making a planning application.
