Council tax - reductions for people with disabilities
You may qualify for a reduction in the valuation band of your property, if there is someone living in your property who is permanently physically disabled, providing a room has been set aside or adaptations or extensions have been made to the property, which are mainly used by the disabled person.
Before granting a reduction we must be satisfied that there is a disabled person resident who needs one or more of the following facilities:
- a room mainly used by and required to meet the needs of the disabled person e.g. a living room used as a bedroom, a room set aside for dialysis equipment;
- a second kitchen or bathroom required to meet the needs of the disabled person (bathrooms converted to shower rooms will NOT qualify);
- space for a wheelchair to be used inside the home.
The extra facilities must be essential or of major importance to the well-being of the disabled person.

To help us decide whether or not you are entitled to the reduction we may, at a later date, need to ask for a letter from an occupational therapist, social worker, doctor or similarly qualified person supporting your application. Alternatively we may arrange for a council officer to visit your home.
