The school travel team works with the majority of schools in Bromley to support them to develop a school travel plan. The main objectives of a travel plan are to promote active travel, reduce congestion and improve safety outside school. Once a travel plan is developed, schools can apply for accreditation under a national recognition scheme called Travel for Life scheme to Bronze, Silver or Gold level.
The benefits of completing a school travel plan are:
- Access to funding support from borough officers and projects such as Scootsure, Smart Movers and the Explorers Ambassador scheme
- Access to knowledge-sharing seminars and application for awards
- A plan can help schools to achieve national awards such as Eco Schools and Healthy Schools
- Opportunities to get pupils engaged in current travel initiatives
- Supports the school curriculum
- Formally identify and document any issues or highway concerns which can be further investigated
- Gives access to toolkits which help pupils and staff get involved and run activities
- The opportunity to network with other schools in Bromley and pan-London
- Take part in projects aimed at secondary students to tackle travel issues
We welcome interest from all schools in the borough who would like to become involved in the scheme. If you would like to know more about School Travel Plans please email: schooltravelplans@bromley.gov.uk
