A tribute for your loved one...

A civil funeral is a ceremony, reflecting the wishes of the deceased and their family, to celebrate the life and the achievements of the deceased.

It is a personal and dignified tribute created by a professional celebrant who works closely with the family or executor and funeral director.

The celebrant will aim to create a highly personal ceremony with the help of family and friends - recounting the person's experiences, attributes and qualities using music, poetry, readings and personal anecdotes.

A civil funeral can be held almost anywhere you wish and is appropriate for cremations and burials including woodland burial sites.

A civil funeral differs from a Humanist funeral in that Humanist funerals do not typically contain any religious elements - while a civil funeral may include hymns, prayers or bible readings if the family wishes.

Memorial and remembrance

A remembrance ceremony is a unique and personal way to celebrate the life of a loved one.

The ceremony can be held:

  • After, or instead of, a funeral ceremony; it may be particularly suitable for occasions when a death has occurred overseas.
  • For the placement of a new headstone or plaque
  • For the scattering of ashes
  • To include family or friends who were not able to attend the funeral
  • On the anniversary of a death or, to commemorate a special birthday or occasion
  • Any other relevant occasion.

About your celebrant

The person conducting the ceremony is a professionally trained celebrant. Celebrants are hand picked for their experience, professionalism and empathy. Celebrants are members of the Registration Service but it is important to note that they are not acting as Registrars when working as a civil funeral celebrant.

Members of the family and friends are welcome to contribute and participate. Our professional and dedicated team are available to offer advice and will ensure that your ceremony is special and personalised in every way.

Arranging a ceremony

Your funeral director will be able to make the initial arrangements on your behalf.
