Dr Kim Howells, Consumer Affairs Minister, has urged businesses to
put in place a contingency plan for dealing with product recalls,
should the need arise.
Publishing new research on product recalls Dr Howells said:
"Even the best businesses make mistakes. And when a serious safety
hazard is discovered, a rapid product recall is vital to sustain
consumer safety and confidence in the business affected.
"This research shows that the key to effective product recalls is not
necessarily putting large amounts of money into it, but that it is the
need to plan ahead and manage a recall carefully, which is critical."
The research report is available from DTI at 1 Victoria Street,
London SW1H 0ET; telephone: (020) 7215 0383. The work was carried
out on consumers products for which DTI has policy responsibility -
all consumer products excluding food, cars and pharmaceuticals.
The 'good practice' guide on product recall is available from the
above address and from DTI Consumer Safety Publications, admail 528,
