Mayor of the London Borough of Bromley - biography
Councillor Dr David Jefferys BSc, MD, DSc, FRCP, FFPM, FRAPS, LLM of Bromley Common and Holwood Ward was elected Mayor of Bromley for 2024 to 2025, at the annual meeting of the council on the 15 May 2024.
David has been a Bromley Councillor since 2011, serving on a wide range of Committees including vice-chairman of Care Services, SACRE and Environment Committees. He has served as the chairman of the Health and Wellbeing Board since 2014.
David has had a varied and distinguished career as an NHS Consultant Physician and Cardiologist, in clinical research as a visiting Professor and as a leading Pharmaceutical Physician. He spent 20 years as the Director and CEO of the UK Agencies Regulating Medicines and Medical Devices and the Government Advisor on Medical Technology, working closely with the EU Commission and World Health Organisation.
David has published widely, over 200 papers, articles, and books.
In 2014 he was recognised by the Science Council as one of the 100 leading practicing scientists in the UK.
From 2005 until his recent retirement, he led the research and regulatory strategy for a major Pharmaceutical Company developing and launching new medicines for cancer, dementia, epilepsy, and obesity as well as overseeing patient safety.
He has served on several local NHS Boards and as a School Governor whilst chairing many national and international bodies. David is currently a Warden of the Society of Apothecaries of London.
In 2020 David was licensed as a Lay Minister leading worship at St Mary's Church, Shortlands as well as preaching in other churches in Bromley including St George's Chapel at Biggin Hill.
In his spare time David enjoys sport, more watching than playing these days, long distance running, water colour painting and the Theatre.
He was brought up in Catford and has lived in Bromley for around 40 years with his wife Ann-Marie. They have two grown-up children and one grandson. Ann-Marie has taught in several schools in Southeast London and was a head teacher in Bromley. Since her retirement she also serves as a Licensed Lay Minister in Bromley and as a Chaplain at Rochester Cathedral along with a portfolio of other voluntary and charity work.
