This Kinship Care Week, Bromley connected persons and special guardianship team in partnership with Kinship, want to raise awareness of the incredible role kinship carers play in children’s lives.

Kinship care is the care and support given to a child whose parents are not able to care for them due to various challenges. This responsibility for caring for the child is taken on by a relative or friend, known as the child’s special guardian or connected person foster carer.

Covid-19 has created additional challenges for everyone but even more so for kinship carers who care for, love and support children despite being faced with daily challenges. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the council’s services to carers have continued to be offered virtually including various trauma informed training sessions and virtual support groups through Connect with Kinship Connected.

Bromley connected persons and special guardianship team in conjunction with the council’s consortium partners will be hosting various events during Kinship Care Week to celebrate and share stories of love and support, and to send a massive thank you to all kinship carers for everything they do.

Councillor Kate Lymer, Executive Member for Children, Education and Families said: “Kinship carers take on a huge undertaking, responsibility, and commitment to the children they look after, not just for a short period of time, but until they reach independence. We want to thank these amazing people during Kinship Care Week by letting people know about the incredible work they do.”

Please share your stories with the connected persons team and find out about all the activities on offer during this week by contacting us on 020 8461 7193 or Connectedpersonduty@bromley.gov.uk.  You can also read more about kinship care on Bromley Council's website.
