The news that Bromley is now London’s top recycling borough is being welcomed, with almost half of household waste being recycled.

The government statistics, released today by Defra, show that Bromley recycled 48.7 percent of all household waste in the financial year 21/22, with residents being thanked for their continued recycling and waste minimisation efforts.  The figures show that Bromley has improved its recycling performance from the previous year when almost 45 percent of waste was recycled, with the remainder of the borough’s waste largely being sent to an Energy Recovery Facility and virtually zero being sent to landfill.

Councillor Aisha Cuthbert, Executive Councillor for Environment said, “This is very welcome news and the fact that Bromley is London’s top recycling Borough underlines our strong green credentials.  Our continuing high recycling performance spans back countless years now and represents a strong partnership between the council, Veolia and residents, with our thanks going to our residents.  We must and will look to do what we can to further enhance our performance and minimise waste as well, with the financial and environmental benefits this brings to us all.”

The statistics show that in total, Bromley recycled or composted 62,590 tonnes, representing 48.7 percent of the total.  Bromley operates a range of recycling collection services, which includes a weekly collection of food waste and every other week collections for paper and other recyclables such as plastics, cans and glass.  Weekly collections for batteries, small electrical items and clothes also take place, with full details available by visiting www.bromley.gov.uk/wastenews.
