Tree watering for the newly planted trees in the borough is well underway, and Tree Friends and residents are invited to support this work.

In the latest phase of their long-term environmental plan for the borough, Bromley Council has managed to plant an incredible number of street trees during the last planting season. Of the over 1500 trees planted, 1250 are new trees that form part of the vouncil‘s Tree-mendous initiative, and helps deliver on their commitment for a clean and green environment.

These newly planted trees will always benefit from additional watering, as they begin to take root and grow. Residents can help by refilling the watering bags that have been placed around the trunks, following guidance from the instructional video on this page.

With the trees now in place, and the warmer weather upon us, the challenge is to keep these trees watered and maintained. Tree watering has been fully operational since May 2023, following a milder and wetter start to the season. Every tree will receive 50L of water plus any required maintenance in each weekly visit.

Councillor Aisha Cuthbert, Executive Councillor for Environment, says “It is tree-mendous that we have planted so many new trees earlier this year as part of the planting season, and now we are watering them to best support their growth at this time. A big thank you to our Tree Friends and residents that are also joining with this work and watering their local street tree. The green watering bags attached to many of our younger street trees can easily be filled up with the water, which will then slowly water the tree over time.”

The council currently maintains a total of 60,412 trees, comprising of 34,446 street trees, 25,609 park trees, and 357 school trees, in addition to 552 hectares of council-owned woodland. This number is ever-changing, with trees being damaged by natural (weather, soil, or animal), or man-made (accidental, criminal, or financial) causes. This also varies with the rapid pace of the environment teams working alongside the council replacing or repairing the borough’s trees.
