A major upgrade of the infrastructure at the Waldo Road depot, which includes the Reuse and Recycling Centre has been agreed, with work getting underway in 2025.

The once in a generation project will mean that the Waldo Road site will be closed to residents during the estimated 1 year build time, with a series of measures being agreed at the Council’s Executive meeting in support of residents.

Whilst the Churchfields Road Reuse and Recycling site will continue to be open to residents, a booking only system will be introduced to help manage the anticipated additional demand and stop residents needlessly queuing. In addition, the Council’s popular weekend green garden waste sites will be open each weekend throughout the gardening season rather than just in the springtime as is currently the case. Residents will also be able to book bulky waste collections directly with the Council, with additional booking capacity being created to help with increased demand.

Councillor Will Rowlands, Executive Councillor for Environment said, “This much needed extensive investment will underpin and help further improve our operations at the site for many years to come.  We are prioritising resident’s recycling and waste collections during the period, which will be unaffected but regrettably we will need to close the Reuse and Recycling Centre during the build period.”

Councillor Rowlands continued, “It is positive news that we have been able to agree a number of measures to help residents during this period, including increasing the duration of our popular weekend garden waste sites during the gardening season. This will help reduce the anticipated demand at Churchfields, where we will also introduce a booking system to help residents avoid queuing as well as the local disturbance this could create.”

The contract for this £11million project, which remains subject to the completion of a legal agreement, will see drainage being improved and renewed in the depot area, with a new roof, wall cladding and fire suppression system for the waste transfer station, which is the area where recycling and waste is sorted before being transported away from the site.

Work will also include replacing the large concrete floor slabs and walls of the waste storage bays, with much of the work focused on the depot part of the site, away from the areas that residents normally visit.
