The official opening of the Council Chamber marks a new era for Bromley Civic Centre as the first Council Meeting takes place at the civic centre headquarters at Churchill Court.
The Mayor cut the ribbon to declare the Council Chamber open ahead of the first Full Council Meeting held on Monday evening (14 October) at Churchill Court, where all councillors and some interested residents joined for the occasion.
The modern new Council Chamber opens following recent works to the building to futureproof the site for council purposes, as part of the wider cost saving Civic Centre move. The Chamber’s features include temperature control, a digital hearing loop, and a wireless microphone system, with the room centred on a tiered Dias incorporating the Ceremonial Mace, with the Bromley crest displayed behind.
The Mayor of Bromley Cllr David Jefferys said: “This is an important and joyous moment for the Council and for Bromley as we begin our time at this modern new Civic Centre, where we will welcome residents for generations to come. While we were of course sad to leave our former home at Stockwell Close, entering this impressive purpose-built Council Chamber today, reveals a bright new chapter in our history.
“I would like to thank all the staff and contractors who have worked tirelessly to deliver the new Chamber on time and to support the transition of staff to the new building. This has been a very complex task with the last phase of the transition to be completed on schedule by the end of the year. I look forward to all we will achieve at Churchill Court, as we stride into our sixtieth year as a borough next year.”
While council services are transitioning to Churchill Court, frontline services remain available at the old civic centre at Stockwell Close as usual, until further notice, with updates to come soon.
