The first tree of the final phase of the Treemendous tree planting work has taken place, with over 1000 trees being planted during this winter season.
Around 5000 new street trees will have been planted by the end of the planting season as part of the counci’s £1.92 million Treemendous planting initiative, now in the fourth and final year. Each year since 2021, around 1250 trees have been planted, making 5000 in total, with the new tree species being planted specially chosen to fit their surroundings.
Councillor Will Rowlands, Executive Councillor for Environment said, “Trees are in the very DNA of our borough and the results of treemendous planting will be apparent for decades to come. I would like to thank residents for their support, particularly our Tree Friends and those of you who watered the newly planted tree in the summer, supplementing the council’s watering and helping the tree establish at a vulnerable early period of the tree’s life. This season’s planting work, part of the council’s largest ever investment in trees, is just getting underway, with carefully selected trees being planted right across the borough in the coming months.”
The trees selected for planting have been chosen to avoid roots spreading across the pavement and causing damage, with species with upwards growing branches also prioritised, with trees also selected for their visual appeal.
Additionally, Tree Friends continue to work with the council to make sure that they trees are getting the best care they can get. Whether this is carrying out additional watering, removing basal growth, and even reporting issues that arise with certain trees, their invaluable assistance ensures that our trees remain healthy and continue to grow.
