The once in a generation upgrade of infrastructure at the Waldo Road depot will start in February 2025 following the appointment of Guildmore Construction, a specialist construction contractor.
The construction work will mean the Waldo Road Reuse and Recycling Centre, which is part of the depot site, will be closed from Sunday 2 February. Residents needing to dispose of bulky waste items will still be able to use the alternative site at Churchfields Road, where a booking system is being introduced to help manage the demand, with other measures in support of residents also planned.
The council’s popular weekend garden waste disposal sites will also be expanded and open for the duration of the gardening season next year to help residents, providing residents with an alternative method of disposing of garden waste throughout the gardening season. Residents will also be able to book bulky waste collections directly with the council, with additional booking capacity being created to help with increased demand.
Councillor Will Rowlands, Executive Councillor for Environment said, “As the Waldo Road Reuse and Recycling centre will be closed from February onwards, there is still time for potentially that much needed clear-out. I encourage residents to think ahead so that they minimise the use of the tip in the next year. It is an opportune moment to really consider what we dispose of and whether there are better ways of doing this, which will practically help as well as being a better financial and environmental option too.”
Councillor Rowlands continued, “The Waldo Road depot is the backbone of many of our operational services, notably our recycling and waste collections. Most of the work, renewing drainage and the like, will take place away from the area residents use to dispose of their bulky items, with this area being utilised to ensure waste collections are not affected by the construction work.”
John Walsh, Guildmore’s Executive Operations Officer said, “Whilst our work takes us across the country, as we are local firm, we particularly welcome being appointed as the construction contractor, with quite specific requirements given the intense use of this site and the modern working requirements, including the fire suppression system, that are needed.”
The once in a generation project will mean that the Waldo Road site, which has been in existence since Victorian times, will be closed to residents during the estimated one-year build time and reopen in Spring 2026. The works contract, part of this £11million project, is being awarded to local firm Guildmore Construction. It will see extensive refurbishment works to the waste transfer station area, being the depot area where recycling and waste is stored before being transported away from the site, outside the area that residents normally visit. This work will include drainage being improved and renewed, a new roof, wall repairs and new cladding and a fire suppression system. Work will also include replacing the large concrete floor slabs and walls of the waste storage bays and installing new weighbridges, which are essential to help record the amount of waste that is being moved through the site.
