A planning application for 35 affordable homes next to Beckenham Spa has received planning approval, giving the green light to the council’s next Bromley Homes for Bromley People development.
The decision was made by Bromley’s Development Control Committee on Thursday 12 December, which approved the application for a development comprising one, two and three bedroom homes in Beckenham Road, with flexible workspace on the ground floor. The council is now proceeding with the planned development, which includes accessible parking with electric car charging, cycle parking and a children’s play area.
Councillor Alexa Michael, Chairman of Development Control Committee, said: “This was a very welcome application that delivers much-needed affordable rented housing on an underused car park site. The proposal made efficient use of space to provide a good number of units at a scale in keeping with the local area. I was pleased that we could grant approval, which I hope will encourage further similar applications to deliver the affordable housing we need through proposals that are in keeping with the borough in their size and design.”
Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing, said: “We are continuing with our multi-million-pound investment to deliver more Bromley homes for Bromley people at sites across the borough, with obvious benefits for residents and council taxpayers. The rising cost of temporary accommodation is causing substantial pressures for the council, as we provide housing for the homeless families who need it. This development is one part of our wider strategy to face up to this considerable challenge, which will deliver substantial savings for the council and a high standard of accommodation for our residents".
Plans will now proceed for the Beckenham housing development to allow works to start in late 2025 in the overflow leisure centre car park, which includes the former Lewis House site. Beckenham Library will reopen following refurbishment well ahead of these works, meaning the temporary library currently on the development site will no longer be needed.
Three housing development have been completed in recent years as part of Bromley Homes for Bromley People programme, with further developments in West Wickham and Orpington nearing completion and works set to begin on a development at Bromley North next year. Early engagement events have also been held for additional housing in St Paul’s Cray, with further details to come in due course.
