The following open letter is the lead article in Bromley Council’s ‘Our Bromley e-newsletter’ which also includes links to Christmas arrangements regarding council services.

Dear Resident,

Despite the gloomy national outlook, 2024 ends a truly historic year for the council on a high note after completing our move from the old Civic Centre to Churchill Court, whilst at the same time finalising arrangements for a brand new, state of the art Bromley Health and Well-being centre with Health colleagues.

This consolidation will save significant costs and enhance future partnership working by providing modern working premises fit to deliver valued services for Bromley residents well into the twenty first century.

We look forward to welcoming you there over the coming months and years, as the occasion demands.

I also anticipate being in a position to confirm some brilliant news concerning the future of the Churchill Theatre over the course of the next few weeks as well.

Please do be aware of the changes to your waste and recycling services over the festive season. All the information you need is on our website, and you’ll also find it in your recent copy of ‘Our Bromley’ Magazine. Also important to know is that Waldo Road Reuse and Recycling Centre will close from Sunday 2 February for a necessary upgrade of the infrastructure at the site. A booking system will be in place at Churchfields Road, so please do check the website nearer the time.

Thank you for your continued support throughout the year and beyond as we continue to deliver quality services despite the financial challenges all local authorities are facing right now and, even though we are in a better position than most, given the close management of our budgets over many years, we’re sadly not immune.

Nothing brings people together more than Christmas and I am delighted to say that our very own innovative initiative to tackle loneliness is hitting the headlines again with another award recognising the work by the council and our partners to stem the adverse feelings of isolation that left unchecked really can have an impact on health. As you meet up with friends and family, do spare a thought for those who may be lonely at this time of year, a kind gesture or a cheery word may make all the difference.

Also, I want to thank the many of you who already give your time freely and generously to support others, including members of our very active community groups and volunteers that make Bromley so very special. Perhaps you’d like to join our Parks or Street Friends or indeed Snow Friends, pending inclement weather, as part of your new year’s resolutions to give something back to our wonderful borough.

Finally, may I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a peaceful and prosperous 2025.

Kind regards and best wishes,

Councillor Colin P. Smith, Leader of Bromley Council
