A new strategy to help tackle homelessness and rough sleeping is being proposed, with views also being sought.
The latest proposed strategy builds on work already undertaken to help prevent homelessness. Respondents are asked to share their views about the council’s proposed priorities to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping across the borough over the next five years, with the public consultation seeking views on the key issues that are being addressed in the strategy. The new strategy (PDF - 791.27 KB) builds on the successes and learning of the last six years and supports those who are facing homelessness.
The proposed strategy builds on the ongoing efforts and commitment to prevent homelessness and aims to end rough sleeping for good, despite the significant nationwide challenges. The proposed strategy also sets out the council’s commitment to working in partnership to prevent or resolve homelessness wherever possible.
The following five key priorities are proposed:
- Early intervention and prevention of homelessness.
- The right support at the right time for adults, young people and children.
- Providing suitable and affordable housing for eligible households.
- Reducing rough sleeping and ending repeat homelessness.
- Reducing the number of households in temporary accommodation.
Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing said, “Our borough has far less rough sleeping than we see elsewhere in London, but homelessness is a serious and costly problem, which has a profound effect too. We have been working to prevent homelessness for some time now and whilst this work is proving to be effective, we are committed to doing more, to both increase housing supply and also to work directly with those facing homelessness, ultimately to stop them becoming homeless. Much of this work is outlined in our proposed strategy and I encourage residents to respond to the consultation.”
The consultation on the strategic priorities and key objectives for the new Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy 2025 to 2030 is now open until 18 February 2025. The council is particularly keen to hear from organisations working with those facing homelessness and people with lived experience. Interested respondents can share views by visiting the council’s website, with further information also available.
