Bromley Trading Standards is reminding residents to be cautious when looking for a locksmith, especially in an emergency, thereby avoiding dealing with a potential rogue trader.

A Trading Standards Checked approved locksmith regularly sees doors destroyed by rogue traders who drill locks as a first attempt to open the door. A reputable locksmith would normally try non-destructive methods first.

When dealing with rogue traders, there is a risk of receiving poor quality work and being substantially overcharged, and it may be difficult to get any redress or comeback. Visit the Master Locksmith Association website for further information on spotting a rogue locksmith.

Follow these steps when looking for a locksmith:

  • Don’t wait until an emergency occurs - identify reliable locksmiths before you need them and keep their number to hand.
  • Don’t rush, even in an emergency; a few minutes to research could prevent a lot of problems later. Read reviews and check any claims of membership of trader organisations.
  • Use a locksmith approved by Trading Standards Checked.
  • Be wary of very cheap advertised prices at the top of an internet search.
  • Check whether you are dealing directly or with a subcontractor. Request their name and contact details to ensure you know who will be carrying out your work in case problems arise.
  • Get a quote for the service you require before you agree to the work.
