In a special challenge for Bromley’s 60th anniversary, the Mayor is walking almost 50 miles around the borough boundary, raising money for his charities while encouraging residents to get involved.
The Mayor and Mayoress recently completed the first leg of the challenge, walking almost 14 miles from Crystal Palace Park to the Biggin Hill Memorial Museum and Chapel.
The Mayor of Bromley Councillor David Jefferys said: “It has been wonderful exploring our great borough through this challenge, with so many beautiful green spaces and much fascinating history to be discovered across Bromley, which seems all the more special during this sixtieth anniversary year.”
“As well as fundraising to support the important work of my charities, I hope this challenge encourages residents to explore more of the borough, and if you would like to join me along the remaining legs of the challenge, then please do so! There is more to come as we commemorate sixty years of our borough this year and I hope residents use this opportunity to come together in various ways to mark the special occasion.”
The challenge is raising funds for the Mayor's chosen charities, which this year are Bromley Youth Music Trust, Welcare in Bromley, and Alzheimer's Research UK. The Mayor was supported on the first leg by the Deputy Mayor and the ward councillor for Hayes and Coney Hall.
The Mayor will be completing the second leg of the challenge, walking from Biggin Hill to St Paul’s Cray, this Saturday (1 March), setting off at 9am from the Biggin Hill Memorial Museum and Chapel and finishing at St Mary Cray Station. The final leg from St Paul’s Cray back to Crystal Palace will then take place on Saturday 8 March. Find out more and see the Mayor’s route on the council website.
Bromley’s official 60th anniversary date is 1 April 2025, with festivities planned in the lead up to this and throughout the year. A programme of activities is being arranged through the borough’s library network, which is set to include a special Bromley Historic Collections exhibition at Bromley Central Library, a children’s poster competition, special Lego sessions, and more.
Further details will be shared in due course, with resident groups and partners encouraged to get in touch and share any plans they have to commemorate the 60th anniversary.
