Five years on from the start of the pandemic, Bromley remembers those who sadly lost their lives from COVID-19 and gives thanks to volunteers involved, as the Mayor hosts a ceremony of reflection.

Representatives from local ambulance and police services joined the Mayor at the Civic Centre alongside the Mayor’s Chaplain and council representatives, including the Leader of the Council and the Chief Executive, to remember those who died in the pandemic, as well their loved ones and all those who suffered during this difficult time. The many local volunteers involved were also thanked for all they gave to look after residents during the pandemic, with the support of emergency services.

The Mayor of Bromley Cllr David Jefferys said: “It is important that we take the time to reflect on the pandemic and remember those who tragically had their lives cut short by the deadly virus and the many others who also suffered. While this was of course such a difficult time, it was also a period where so many also showed their bravery and generosity in supporting those who needed it, including here in Bromley. The reflections shared, including of incredible volunteers across the borough, were truly inspiring and I sincerely thank all those who supported residents during the pandemic in such varied and important ways.”

A photo of the service held on the first anniversary of the COVID-19 lockdown was unveiled at the ceremony, which was taken in front of the Old Palace at Bromley’s former civic centre. In tribute, 740 candles were lit to remember each of the residents who had died in the pandemic at this time, as a poignant service of remembrance took place, which residents came together to join virtually.

As the photo was unveiled, the former Mayor of Bromley, Cllr Hannah Gray, shared her experiences of being Mayor during the pandemic. Jackie Baxter, Bromley Council’s Environment Campaigns Officer, also spoke of her experiences working during the pandemic. Jackie was awarded a Medal of Order of the British Empire for her dedication in supporting residents in both a professional and personal capacity, particularly during the early stages of the pandemic.

Further COVID-19 commemorations are also taking place across the borough, with the Mayor later joining residents and staff at Park Avenue Care Home for further reflection, where a generous £200 donation was also received to support the Mayor’s charities.

The Mayor has also undertaken a series of informal visits to join reflections and thanks groups who served and sustained residents in Bromley during the pandemic and related lockdowns.
