News that over half of all waste is now being recycled by London’s top recycling borough is being welcomed.
The milestone achievement of recycling over half of all waste, with again almost zero waste also going to landfill underlines Bromley’s leading recycling performance in London. The government statistics, released by Defra, show that Bromley recycled 50.9 per cent of all household waste in the financial year 23/24, with residents being thanked for their continued recycling and waste minimisation efforts.
Councillor Will Rowlands, Executive Councillor for Environment said, “I am delighted to share this latest brilliant recycling news and crucially thank residents for their recycling efforts. By minimising waste and maximising recycling, there is direct impact on our costs, which remains critically important whilst also supporting the environment. A big thank you as well to Veolia and their staff, who make recycling and waste collections in all weathers.”
Councillor Rowlands continued, “We will continue to look at incremental ways to constantly improve and to sustain this fantastic performance. It remains critically important to continue and make best use of our recycling collections including weekly food waste collections. We have also introduced weekend garden waste collection sites this year to support residents whilst Waldo Road is temporarily closed. This also supports our recycling, with garden waste being composted and I thank residents for their continued support and understanding with all of this.”
Ben Velmans, Regional Manager for Veolia Bromley said, “We are proud of our partnership with Bromley Council to deliver recycling and waste collections, street cleansing services and operate the borough’s reuse and recycling centres. Bromley’s recognition as London’s top recycling borough for the third year in a row is a fantastic achievement.
“Through our extensive community engagement programmes, we’ve seen first-hand the incredible commitment from residents to separate as much recycling as possible. In the last year, we have supported Bromley Council to boost garden waste recycling, reduce recycling contamination and increase participation in food waste services. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the council and the community to build a more sustainable future."
The statistics show that in total, Bromley recycled or composted 61,777 tonnes, representing 50.9 per cent of the total. The statistics also show that the total amount of waste being disposed of has remained broadly the same as last year, with 121,279 tonnes in total, compared to 120,956 tonnes last year.
Most of the borough’s recycling is collected from residents in a dedicated range of recycling collection services, including a weekly collection of food waste and every other week collections for paper and other recyclables such as plastics, cans and glass. More information on recycling, rubbish and waste is available, including details about garden waste collection sites operating at the weekends.
