Industrial pollution and environmental permitting

We are responsible for permitting and inspecting businesses which have the potential to cause air pollution and which must be authorised under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010, in order to control and limit the emissions to the atmosphere. These include vehicle spraying operations, crematoria, concrete batching plant and concrete crushing plant, dry cleaners and petrol filling stations.

Local authorities are responsible for controlling Part B and Part A2 installations under the Local Air Pollution Prevention and Control regime (LAPPC). Other installations (known as ‘Part A1’) are regulated by the Environment Agency.

Any person operating an installation that requires a permit under the LAPPC must submit an environmental permit application form with a fee to the local authority. The operator of the prescribed process must comply with the conditions of the permit and they will be subject to inspection to ensure this is the case. Breaching the conditions we set will lead to enforcement action and can lead to prosecution.

For Part A2 and Part B processes you can apply direct to us, except waste operations carried out at Part B installations which are regulated by the Environment Agency.

The fee you will pay depends on the information you supply in your application.
