Travel for Life Explorers Ambassadors is a programme designed for primary school pupils to take the lead in promoting safe and active travel within their school communities. This used to be called the Junior Travel Ambassador programme and has been running in Bromley for over 10 years.

This is a very important role, which helps pupils develop communication and confidence skills whilst making a valuable contribution to the school and community. The Travel Ambassadors are supported by a School Guide (a member of staff from their school), and also by officers from the Road Safety Unit.

At the start of the school year, we host an induction day for new recruits for Travel Ambassadors to learn more about their role. The Mayor of Bromley is usually in attendance to present the Travel Ambassadors with a special badge and certificate. Over the years, we have inducted over 500 pupils!

Pupils will also receive a resource kit containing all the information, ideas, templates and small rewards to help carry out fun competitions and activities within school.

These activities could be:

  • Maintaining displays within school
  • Promoting our termly competitions
  • Devising their own school competitions
  • Giving short talks in assemblies
  • Assisting with monitoring their school’s participation in Smart Movers
  • Helping with Travel Plan tasks, such as collecting walking figures.

We ask schools to keep and evidence all of the work they do. This contributes to the schools Travel for Life Accreditation status (TfL STARS - Getting young London moving) and also allows the Travel Ambassadors to nominate their school for the Top Team of the Year award at the end of the academic year. Schools are then shortlisted and invited to a Top Team event in the summer, where we announce the winner.

We have a number of primary schools across the borough are participating in the scheme. If you would like more information, please email: road.safety@bromley.gov.uk.
