Tree planting programme
Bromley Council embarked on an ambitious tree planting programme in 2021, aiming to plant an additional 5000 street trees in the borough in the following 4 year period.
The Treemendous tree planting programme was introduced to see that these new street trees were planted in addition to the trees that the council plants annually as part of its policy commitment to plant a replacement tree for every tree that is removed. This forms part of the council’s tree management for trees that have failed, been damaged or sadly needed felling because of disease or safety reasons.
During the 2021/22 planting season, Bromley Council, with our contractors planted 1462 trees in the borough. Of these, 1250 were brand new trees, with an additional 212 routine replacement trees.
During the 2022/23 planting season, Bromley Council, with our contractors planted 1590 trees in the borough. Of these, 1250 were brand new trees, with an additional 340 routine replacement trees.
During the 2023/24 planting season, Bromley Council, with our contractors are scheduled to plant 1510 trees in the borough. Of these, 1250 will be brand new trees, with an additional 260 routine replacement trees.
Bromley Council recognising the health benefits that trees provide to those who live, work and study in the borough. The trees planted were carefully selected for the locations to complement the existing trees already on site or to improve and diversify the species of trees in that area. Every newly planted tree benefits from an aftercare programme. With all new trees, regular watering is needed to help them successfully establish, especially during warmer weather in the summer months. As part of this, Bromley Council’s tree watering and tree maintenance contractors water each newly planted tree, giving each tree 50 litres or 11 gallons of water per week over the summer months, helping ensure they are kept in the best health possible.
How can I get involved?
Introduced in the 2022/23 planting and watering season, we have installed QR code cards on each newly planted Treemendous tree in the borough. These unique QR codes provide information about the tree species, and records our contractors’ watering frequency and maintenance, as well as allowing residents to log their own watering and maintenance on the app. See here to find out more about these QR’s and how they work.
Residents can also support these new trees by becoming Tree Friends in their area. The council’s Tree Friends work to help with watering, removing damaged branches, and reporting issues with trees, of which all residents can take play their part. To become a Tree Friend, residents can sign up at bromley.gov.uk/TreeFriends, where they can report issues with trees and find out more about how to water them.
Residents are also being invited to suggest where new trees could be planted. In the 2022 planting season, 231 of the 1250 new trees planted in the borough were sourced directly from resident requests.
