Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) 0 to 18
The CAMHS service in Bromley is provided by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. CAMHS work with children and young people up to the age of 18 in Bromley.
Bromley specialist community CAMHS provides specialist mental health consultation, assessment and treatment to children and young people aged 0 to 18 with severe and enduring emotional, behavioural, and mental health difficulties, and their families/carers.
Bromley CAMHS has a particular role to support children and young people at high risk or who present at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department because of their mental health needs.
Moving to adult mental health services
Sometimes young people under the care of CAMHS will be referred to adult mental health services where it is felt that further support may be needed beyond their 18th birthday.
Similar to children and young people’s services, in Bromley there is a Mental Health Single Point of Access (MH-SPA) into adult mental health services which is jointly run between the Bromley Mental Health Hub and Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.
The MH-SPA ensures that adults can access the right support for them whether in the NHS, or with a range of other services including employment support, talking therapies, peer support and, for those with more enduring mental health challenges, a recovery college which provides skills and advice for people who require this help.
The CAMHS worker will discuss and develop a transition plan with the young person, family or support network and a representative from adult mental health services.
This process ordinarily happens within 3 and 6 months in advance of a young person's 18th birthday, depending on clinical circumstances.
You can discuss the process for moving from children’s to adult mental health services with your CAMHS worker which includes the other options available for a young person’s mental health and wellbeing after the age of 18 if they do not want to transition to adult mental health services.
